Which artwork file do you need for garment printing?

A clear logo on screen can still fail at production size. This guide explains vector and raster files, resolution, transparency, fonts and colour handover.

The filename alone does not prove that artwork is production-ready. A PDF can contain a low-resolution image, and a large PNG can still be unsuitable if its background or edges are wrong. The useful question is whether the file contains enough clean information at the intended print size.

Vector files for logos and flat graphics

Vector artwork stores shapes mathematically, so it can be enlarged without becoming pixelated. AI, EPS, SVG and properly created PDF files are ideal for logos, text and solid graphic elements.

Convert fonts to outlines or include the correct font files. Linked images should be embedded, and effects that depend on unsupported software should be expanded or checked.

Raster files for photographs and textured artwork

PNG, TIFF, PSD and high-quality JPEG files are pixel-based. They can work well when the pixel dimensions support the final print size. A small internet image cannot be made sharp simply by setting it to 300 ppi.

Check resolution at the real production dimensions. For example, artwork intended for a wide back print needs far more pixels than the same artwork used as a small chest mark.

  • Use transparent PNG or TIFF when no background should print
  • Avoid screenshots and compressed social-media downloads
  • Keep layered source files when edits may be required
  • State the intended width or height in centimetres

Transparency, white ink and edges

A white rectangle behind a logo will normally print unless it is intentionally removed. Semi-transparent pixels, soft shadows and anti-aliased edges can also behave differently over coloured garments.

Inspect artwork against both light and dark backgrounds. This reveals unwanted halos and helps determine whether white elements are design content or empty background.

Colour references and production expectations

Screens use emitted RGB light, while garments, inks and threads reflect light. Exact monitor matching is therefore not a realistic approval method. Provide Pantone or brand references when colour consistency is important.

A physical sample is the safest approval route for critical brand colours, unusual fabrics or a new production combination.

Outlining prevents font substitution when the production system does not have the original typeface.

Can you repair a low-resolution logo?
