Which fabric is best for garment printing?

Cotton is not automatically best and polyester is not automatically difficult. Surface, stretch, coating, colour and print method determine the result together.

A fibre label gives only part of the production picture. Two cotton shirts can have different surfaces, weights and pretreatments; two polyester garments can react differently to heat and dye migration. Evaluate the complete fabric construction.

Seven properties to check

Start with fibre composition, then inspect surface texture, weight, stability, stretch, heat tolerance, dye behaviour and any coating. These properties determine whether ink or a transfer can bond and remain visually stable.

The intended use adds another layer: a fashion T-shirt, sports jersey, softshell jacket and safety vest should not be evaluated by the same priority list.

Cotton and cotton-rich fabrics

Smooth cotton is versatile for DTG, DTF and screen printing. It often gives a comfortable hand feel and predictable surface, but loose fibres and uneven texture can reduce edge sharpness.

Organic certification describes the fibre supply, not automatic print quality. Construction and finishing still need evaluation.

Polyester and performance fabrics

Polyester is common in sport and workwear because it is light, durable and quick-drying. It can also release dye under heat, causing migration into light-coloured prints.

Use lower-temperature systems or barrier solutions where required, and test coloured garments before committing to volume.

Blends, fleece, piqué and coated garments

Blends balance comfort and stability but may accept ink unevenly. Piqué has a textured surface, fleece can compress, and softshell or waterproof coatings can limit adhesion.

A sample on the exact colour and product is more valuable than a generic statement that a material is printable.
