DTF or screen printing: which is smarter for your quantity?
Screen printing can become efficient for repeatable volume, while DTF stays flexible for complex colours and mixed runs. Quantity is important, but not the only factor.
The common rule that screen printing is for large orders and DTF is for small orders is useful only as a starting point. Artwork colours, garment mix, print size, desired feel and future repeat orders can move the decision in either direction.
DTF keeps complex runs flexible
DTF transfers can reproduce detailed multi-colour designs without preparing a separate screen for every colour. This is useful when an order contains several sizes, garments or short repeat batches.
The print forms a transfer layer, so large solid artwork can feel more present than an open design. Correct heat application remains essential.
Screen printing rewards repeatability
Screen printing pushes ink through prepared screens. Setup increases with the number of colours, but production can become efficient when many identical garments use the same design.
Ink system, mesh, curing and fabric all affect the result. Screen printing is not automatically suitable simply because the quantity is high.
There is no universal crossover quantity
A one-colour design on hundreds of identical shirts is a strong screen-printing candidate. A smaller full-colour order with names, mixed products or frequent design changes may suit DTF.
Compare total setup, expected repeats and quality goals instead of using one fixed number as an industry rule.
- Number of artwork colours
- Total identical units
- Garment colours and fabrics
- Print dimensions and coverage
- Need for names or variations
- Expected repeat orders
Approve feel and colour on the real garment
A digital mock-up cannot show ink feel, fabric show-through or transfer edge. Request a physical sample when those characteristics are important.
Keep the approved production specification with the artwork so future repeats use the same dimensions, colours and process.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about this subject
At what quantity does screen printing become cheaper?
There is no fixed number. Colour count, setup, garment mix and print size all affect the crossover.
Which method handles many colours better?
DTF often handles detailed multi-colour artwork more flexibly because it does not need one screen per colour.
Which method feels softer?
It depends on ink system and artwork coverage. Open screen prints can feel light; large solid DTF transfers feel more noticeable.
Can screen printing be used on polyester?
Yes with suitable inks and testing, but dye migration and heat behaviour must be controlled.
Can an order use both?
Yes, when different garments or repeat quantities justify different production routes.
